Oblong Man Weds Normal Woman

Just a quick one today. I heard this story on an episode of QI (series “N”, episode “News”).

In the 1970s, an Illinois newspaper the Bloomington Pantagraph ran a headline titled “Oblong Man Weds Normal Woman“. What they were referring to was a man who came from the town of Oblong and a woman who came from the town of Normal.

Normal was named from the Illinois Normal State University, while Oblong chose their name in 1880 because they were tired of their original name, Henpeck.

The participants on this episode of QI probably rightly pointed out that the Bloomington Patagraph had probably been sitting on this headline for a while, just waiting for the day a couple from these two towns got married.
